Jewish kids raised in the suburbs of Michigan generally don’t go on to become pioneers of some of the dirtiest music known to man. Not Disco D. Becoming a turntable wizard almost overnight, Disco D was already finding himself spinning alongside some of the Midwest’s top DJs, regularly playing some of the areas top clubs, and becoming a house party staple at the nearby University of Michigan (where Disco D would later graduate with a degree in business) all before he even graduated high school. Taking influence from nearby Chicago and Detroit’s ghetto house and techno scenes, respectively, as well as hip-hop and Miami bass, Disco, along with the legendary DJ Godfather, began to pioneer a new style of urban dance music called ghettotech. Characterized by pornographic vocals over fast-paced, unpolished dance beats, the teenage Disco D’s ghettotech would see play worldwide. Disco D would put out his pioneering ghettotech record, D-Down, in 1998. Before he even lost his virginity, D-Down‘s title track is the quintessential ghettotech record – gritty beats and a hook that simply goes “dick that bitch down, dick that bitch down.” An oddity, given his background? Sure. But it was undeniable, the mild-mannered business student was on to something."~okayfuture
