The singer bice started out with a more straightforward singer/songwriter pop style under her birth name, Yuko Nakajima (including 1996's Charmless?, on which she collaborated with Shibuya-kei group Oh! Penelope). However, as she developed her distinctive breathy vocal style, she changed her stage name to bice and shifted towards a more stripped-down acoustic-laden style to complement her voice. Although her singer/songwriter style was often much more low-key than other neo-acoustic artists, bice did have more uptempo tracks in the vein of typical guitar pop, especially on her early singles and EPs, and that vocal style along with the singer/songwriter sensibility helps to set them apart from other groups in the style at the time. She would later incorporate more of Shibuya-kei's Lounge and Bossa nova influence on her debut full-length album, Nectar, in 2001. Sadly, bice passed away in 2010, two years after the release of her third and final album.
