Air Superiority in the Joint Force Air superiority has played role in every American conflict since World War I. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh has said that air superiority “is fundamental to the American way of war,” but is that capability something we can assume for our joint forces in a potential future conflict? What types of threats will we face in the future and how will they challenge our ability to seize and maintain command of the air? What types of platforms will we need to employ to ensure air superiority? How do we prepare joint force leaders to think about air superiority at the strategic level?
