One thing I missed in this vid, you need to group the original iris together with the highlights before you set your clip.

I've noticed that there are some people who are unfamiliar with Inkscape's clip feature and have to resort to less efficient methods of getting flush edges.  Hopefully this will help you make better looking eyes.
