Originally, I started writing this song about my experiences growing up on the internet. In specificity, my very first internet friend, Bonnie, and how I began to learn about genuine friendships in defiance of being taught to never interact with strangers. But, I began to explore the idea of a love story between Bonbon — referred to as Bonnie — and Lyra, as the lyrics developed. “CUTIEMARKS” deals a lot with my childhood memories and trauma, and so I really wanted to hone in the sounds and feelings of a sort of brash, youthful love. It became a song about Bonbon and Lyra chatting and simultaneously daydreaming about each other, daring to embrace their truest and even darkest feelings in the face of the trauma that they both carry.
