When I was 20, I started seeing a psychologist for my suicidal depression. He told me that my thoughts were like a cloud that I pulled from randomly, instead of heading from point A to point B; and I hadn't realized that other people thought differently. He told me to read Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce, thinking I'd relate to it. I made it 7 pages through the cryptic impressionistic madness, got absolutely nothing out of it, and gave up. I stopped seeing my psychologist once I was being medicated and had nothing left to talk about with him. A few years later, he crashed a plane, killing himself and a local musician, on accident. A few more years later, I figured out what had confused him: the reason I can't relate to Joyce, and couldn't relate to him; but since I'm an Analyst, all I had to get was one line in my head to extrapolate the rest of the universe. This video is what ninety minutes of lateral thinking feels like.
