Metal I think, by and large, is about coping with an incredibly scary world by trying to be even scarier; but in a safe, controlled environment. It's like a warm womb for the mentally disturbed, or something. Granted, I do think there are many metalheads who actually want to go out and inflict some of the very evils metal admonishes out of feeling justified by the existence of the evil in reference, but I don't think that mentality rests at the heart of the genre or its fans, and those people tend to fall away.
