Granny Smith has been part of MLP since the very first episode.  But while she did make several appearances during Season One, the writers didn't seem to make her into much more than a running gag.  However, she seems to be making more appearances and showing more of her character as the show went on.  And the first episode that made her part of the main focus is Family Appreciation Day.  So, after all this time of not being in the spotlight, what sort of story did the writers give to Granny Smith?
