One may look at the differences between Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer and easily understand why one had succeeded while the other had failed.  You could talk about how Sunset had a desire for power and glory, while Twilight has chosen to be content with some of the more simple things of life.  You could talk about how Sunset had a need for vengeance against those who had wronged her, while Twilight has never shown hatred towards anyone.  However, there is one element that I think could actually stand out more than any other.  Something that may not be so apparent at first glance.
