It's been over two years since we've gotten an episode focusing on Spike and Rarity.  I for one think there is a lot of story potential with these two, even without making their relationship any closer than it is now.  So, when I had read the synopsis for Inspiration Manifestation several weeks ago, I was very much looking forward to seeing what sort of conflict the writers would come up with.  And...they did pretty well.
