Backstory: Thousands of years ago, when Celestia and Discord (then known by a different name) were children, they were the closest of friends. Their friendship was, however, looked downward upon by the Royal Family, as, unlike the soon-to-be Leader of Equestria, Discord was a poor, homeless and orphaned pony who lived on the streets. Nonetheless, the pair continued to play together throughout their childhoods, and as they grew older, Discord found himself falling in love with his close companion.
Unfortunately, Celestia was eventually forced to take up her leadership duties as Princess, and thus Discord was left alone, forever lost to his only love. Over many years of loneliness, he found his confusion and grief turn to insanity and anger. Eventually, in revenge against Celestia (who he by now blamed for his own misfortune) Discord gave himself a new title, wishing to transfer the chaos of his own life to the rest of the world, attacking ponykind in a chaotic fight that was only ended when Celestia was forced to turn him into stone.
Many years passed, and finally Discord was freed from his prison. Celestia never forgave the colt for his siege on ponykind, but was simultaneously full of grief that he had taken that road. Discord was unrecognizable, no longer retaining any of the emotion, grief or innocence of his younger self. Instead, any remnants of who he once was had been shrouded by anger and chaos. While outwardly he was a new colt, deep inside he retained some of his past love for the Princess, a mournful longing reflected in this song.
