Trixie from the day she saw her first magic show wanted to be amazing at magic. Her first magic show didn't go over so well, and she wanted to prove herself to everypony. She went to Ponyville to do another magic show, this time however she did anything it takes to get the ponies to like her, even lying. When that Ursa Minor came and attacked, it became clear that all trust Ponyville had for her had gone down the drain. Trixie would never admit it at the time, but she envied Twilight for being able to put the Ursa Minor back in it's habitat without a scratch on her. Trixie became jealous, so she went and worked for a year at the rock farm. She bought the Alicorn Amulet, and returned to Ponyville. Through this period of time she did a lot of things that she wasn't proud of, and when Twilight tricked her, it made her realize that this wasn't the thing to do. Trixie from then on out would become good at magic like Twilight did, through practice and studying. The blue unicorn put the past behind her, and started a new life.
