'Classy.'" BGM from the episode "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (S04E19). --Overall Comments-- Dave Polsky returns with another great, and surprisingly dark, episode for the season! Rarity helps Sweetie Belle finish her dress designs for a play which she wrote, directed, and is performing. But when Rarity makes some improvements to them, the dresses outshine young Sweetie Belle's production. The young filly blames her sister for doing this on purpose, leading her down a path of anger, nightmares, and regret. Everyone's favorite Princess of the Night, Luna, arrives in Sweetie's dreams to help guide her through her past, present, and potential future if she does not undo her actions. This episode, both in what happens as well as with the music, is a direct continuation of "Sleepless in Ponyville," but with Sweetie Belle instead of Scootaloo. It's great to see the series take on a connected series of episodes over multiple seasons such as this that isn't related to the overarching plot (I can only assume we'll get one with Apple Bloom next season). In both "Sleepless" and this episode, we have one of the CMC having issues (albeit different ones) with their sister, or in Scootaloo's case, "sister.": The CMC begin having nightmares spurred by their issues with their sister, and Luna steps into their dreams to assist them through their problems, and help them with their fears. Luna takes a different approach with Sweetie Belle, taking her through her past (and how Rarity was actually looking out for her instead of trying to outshine her at her 5th birthday), Rarity's stress in the present, and how Sweetie's actions will negatively impact her sister in the future. I loved the Christmas Carol homage here—I grew up with that play, and they adapted the overall theme of it fantastically for this episode. Throughout these dream sequence, we have some of the best imagery the show has had so far: creepy, weird, moving, and sometimes downright frightening. Seeing Rarity's downfall due to Sweetie Belle's actions was pretty dark, especially for this show. In the end, it was great seeing Luna taking an even more direct approach with a member of the CMC's dreams this time, laying it on very thick for Sweetie to drive the point home. What I loved most about this episode was how it played a lot of the same plot points as "Sleepless in Ponyville" while still remaining original. It adds a sense of more continuity to the series. William Anderson's BGM follows suit, reprising many of the musical themes from "Sleepless" for this episode. We hear the same tense BGM during the dark future portion of Sweetie Belle's nightmare that we heard during the scenes of Scootaloo's nightmares from "Sleepless." The best reprise was definitely that of "Luna's Theme" during the parts where Luna appears on screen. This theme was first used during the similar scenes in "Sleepless in Ponyville" when Luna appeared to Scootaloo in her dreams. More recently, this theme was used in "Luna's Banishment Suite" from the Season 4 opener "Princess Twilight Sparkle." It's a great theme which has the feel of nighttime, and matches Luna's character perfectly. I'm glad to see William Anderson continue to use it for her, especially in situations similar to that which it was used in the past. --Track Specific Comments-- Happy 200th! This is the 200th piece of BGM from season 4—that's insane... and classy! Sweetie Belle is fishing for compliments during the post-show, especially when she finds out the Mane 6 were not able to attend. She becomes increasingly distressed as she realizes her worst fears have been confirmed: her sister's dresses have outshined her performance. It's fun hearing the BGM's tone change as Sweetie Belle becomes more frustrated. (Watch in 1080p!)
