Glass of Water" from the episode "Three's A Crowd" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (S04E11). (DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW). --Overall Comments-- This might just be the most wacky episode of the show so far, and with Discord taking center stage is that really much of a surprise? Twilight and Cadance attempt to spend some quality world-not-in-peril time together at a traveling Starswirl the Bearded Museum. However, that time does not last long as everyone's favorite Draconequus shows up with quite the illness: Blue Flu. With Fluttershy out-of-town, Twilight and Cadence are forced to care for him. This episode's BGM is filled with sarcastic pity violin and a sizable amount of harpsichord. You'd almost think it's a Rarity episode. I guess the point being Discord is acting quite over-dramatically, much like Rarity—a nice subtle musical joke by William Anderson & team! Heck, Discord even requests a "fainting couch" during the episode, at which point everyone looks at Rarity. The BGM isn't all small and sarcastic, however. We do get a very high-octane battle piece as Twilight and Cadence battle the quite horrifying Tatzlwurm. And how could we forget the first Discord song? Boy, does it deliver! To go along with one of the craziest episodes so far, we get hands down the most insane, out-of-control song of the series. It's amazing John De Lancie was able to keep up. This episode will be remembered for years to come—or perhaps until next week...! --Track Specific Comments-- So here's what has to be the highlight of the episode, and one of the highlights of the series overall. Discord's first song, "Glass of Water" has the most insane pace, lyrics, and visuals we've heard and seen from the series thus far. The visuals themselves almost overload you by themselves, throwing non-stop visual gags and references for two whole minutes. There is so much packed into this sequence its ridiculous. The song itself is no different. What starts out with a mild pace, quickly turns into a out-of-control wild ride that keeps increasing in speed and complexity until we reach the end. Discord's singing is in a Sprechgesang-style, meaning he's not quite always singing nor just speaking, which fit's his character so perfectly. I've heard this song compared to "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin, which has Robin Williams as the Genie singing in a similar style. The entire sequence itself actually reminded me of Mumbo's musical number from another one of my favorite animated shows "Teen Titans" called "Master of Your Fate" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaaHOTJ-F0w). In fact, there's a lot of similarities between Mumbo and Discord anyway. The vocal expressions John De Lancie gives during this song are incredible and greatly fun to listen to. It's also fun to hear just how many rhymes with "please" Ed Valentine was able to come up with for this song. The backing track, orchestrated by Steffan Andrews, could not have been easy to create. You can listen to it alone in the instrumental version, linked below in the "other versions" section. While I really like Friendship is Magic more traditional song and it's broadway-style number, it's always a treat to hear it try out new, different, and complex styles like in this song or "Bats".
