“Rules of Rarity" from the episode “Canterlot Boutique" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S05E14). (DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW). --Overall Comments-- Harpsichord? Mandolin? Must be a Rarity episode! Definitely happy to see everyone’s favorite marshmallow mare taking center stage again. In this episode, Rarity finally realizes one of her dreams: to own a boutique in the prestigious Canterlot. But this turn out to be more of a challenge than she realized, as she battles with letting someone else run the show, and the loss of her TLC in her dresses. This episode featured some fantastic backing music, including the return of the fashion show-style score. The star of the music is definitely the song (and it’s two reprises!) “Rules of Rarity”; the first song we’ve had for a while (since episode 5)! --Track Specific Comments-- Here it is! Our first song from Daniel Ingram in 9 episodes! It’s crazy to think the last song we heard this season was “I’ll Fly” all the way back in episode 5. Here we have our first Rarity song (in the main series) since season 4’s Rarity Takes Manehattan. [Of course, we had a Rainbow Rocks short with a Rarity song since then as well.] This song is fantastic at matching the emotion that Rarity is going through during the scene, and allows you to feel how she is throughout. This classic musical number includes plenty of mandolin, guitar, and pan flute. It is definitely reminiscent of season 1’s “Art of the Dress” in terms of instrumentation. The song goes through a few different emotional states as we go through Rarity’s thought process. We start out upbeat and happy as Rarity begins her dress making. This part is filled with mandolin, guitar, and a repeating flute/oboe motif. As the song progresses, we get a little bridge during which the pace picks up a tad, and more orchestra is added as it builds. As Sassy Saddles presents Rarity with more work, the music quickly turns sorrowful, with more strings added, as Rarity is forced to make the same dresses over and over. This leads into a somber repeat of the song’s chorus, with a more prominent mandolin. Inspiration then hits Rarity, and the song picks up into a second bridge and a couple key changes. This is probably my favorite section of the song. During the second part of the bridge, more brass is brought in as the tempo picks up and guitar switches up. It really give you an invigorated feeling, much like what Rarity is feeling. As Rarity finishes the modifications to the dress, the chorus is reprised again, this time with a new, even more upbeat style with more glockenspiel and strings than before. I really must give credit to Kazumi Evans here for her amazing vocals for this song, so many little nuances which really add to the feel of the entire thing. Also, Caleb Chan continues to do a fantastic job at filling in Steffan Andrew’s large shoes with the song’s orchestration. Another beautiful Rarity song in the books! (Watch in 1080p!)
