“The Catch” BGM from the episode “The Cart Before the Ponies” of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S06E14).


--Overall Comments--

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are set up to compete in the Applewood Derby; but when they ask their sisters for assistance, they receive more help than they bargained for.

This episode had a few unexpected things throughout.  I was expecting some montage score during the carts’ construction, but when that scene began, I thought a song was beginning.  Then, it turned out to not be a song.  However, later during the race, the episode did surprise with a song, and it was revealed that the music during the previous montage was actually its instrumental!  To top it all off, we did have a short race montage score to conclude the episode with.

I believe that this episode had some of the best blending of score and song in the series, outside of the musical episodes.  There were many times I was having trouble figuring out if pieces of score were parts of the song’s instrumental or not, as William Anderson did a superb job of playing upon the song’s style, especially in the final race montage.

The song itself has that season 1 & 2 feel to it, with heavy acoustic guitar and mandolin, as well as a fun, extremely catchy melody.  This is only the third episode which features an instrumental of the song featured in the episode (the other two being “Winter Wrap Up” and this season’s “Spice Up Your Life”).  However, this is the first episode in which said instrumental appears before the song itself!


--Track Specific Comments--

The pizzicato strings continue from the cold open in "The Catch."  I really enjoyed this and the previous track's instrumentation.  It really does fit the schoolhouse setting well.
