“The Magic Inside" from the episode “The Mane Attraction" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S05E24). (DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW). --Overall Comments-- It’s finally here: the episode we’ve all been waiting for. The final regular episode of the season, Amy Keating Rogers’ final episode, and special guest Lena Hall And boy, what an episode it was! A great story, some spectacular animation and effects, and four diverse and unique songs, all filled with beautiful vocals from Lena Hall. All leading up to the final version of the song number that many of us have been anticipating since this year’s Comic Con. Not much more to say overall. Thank you to Amy Keating Rogers for all of the wonderful episodes you’ve given us over the years on this show, and we all are looking forward to more stuff from you in the future! --Track Specific Comments-- Well, here it is: the big number! The song we heard earlier in the year, now complete in non-camrip quality and fully animated. And boy, does it ever deliver. This might be my favorite song of the series thus far, and definitely the most beautiful. It’s simple, and is not anywhere near the most complicated song in terms of its instrumentation. However, that is what makes it so great. A fantastic piano part, mixed with Lena Hall’s breathtaking vocals makes this song something special, and something really only this series could pull off. Seriously, would you hear something like this on any other animated (or, for that matter, even live-action) show currently on television? Amy Keating Rogers stated that the song was a homage to Lady Gaga’s acoustic versions of her songs. In many ways, from the lyrics and topic, to the melody and style of the song itself, the song also bears much resemblance to Christina Perri’s song “Human”. (Where the chorus’ lyrics are “But I’m Only Human”, very similar to “I Am Just a Pony”). That song builds up with more production and percussion as well, more like how Daniel Ingram stated this song was originally produced. I definitely recommend giving that song a listen, ‘cause the similarities are fun to hear. “The Magic Inside” definitely wins out, in my opinion! The song begins in its simplest form, just Rara playing the piano and delivering a smooth, satisfying vocal performance. Strings are slowly layered more and more on top of this throughout the song, but never overtake it. The vocals and piano remain the focus, with the rest backing them up and providing additional emotional punch. Daniel Ingram stated on Facebook that there was originally more production near the end with a full orchestra, and while I’d _love_ to eventually hear that version as well, I’m glad they kept it the way it current appears. It’s just perfect. One thing that didn’t come through as clearly through the camprip in the echo-y hall from the showing at Comic Con was the wonderful arpeggios during the chorus, especially at its end, as well as the string backing during the second verse. And enough credit cannot be given to Lena Hall, who just blows away this song’s vocals. It’s quite an honor to the show to have a talent such as herself deliver such a number. If this is what Ingram is able to produce for the show, I cannot wait to see what he has in store for the movie with a full orchestra! If this song doesn’t win that emmy, then there’s no hope left for those! (Watch in 1080p!)
