“The McColts" BGM from the episode “The Hooffields and McColts” of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S05E23).


--Overall Comments--

Finally another map episode, and after numerous ones, Twilight and Fluttershy get their turn to be called.  Both are summoned to the Smokey Mountains, where two rival families are fighting for reasons they can’t exactly remember.  It’s up to the Princess of Friendship and the Element of Kindness to try and stop the feud.

Being a map episode, all of the map-related motifs from the season make a reappearance in the beginning and the end.  However, the highlight of this episode is definitely all of the country and bluegrass music throughout, including rival motifs for both the Hooffields and McColts.  It’s wonderful to hear these two similar, yet different themes go up against each other throughout the course of the episode, and I’ll definitely be sure to point it out for each.  And to top it all off, we have our 5th episode this season with its own credits music!  So, let’s get right into it all.


--Track Specific Comments--

After visiting the Hooffields, Twilight and Fluttershy pay a visit to the McColts.  Here, we have their family’s motif.  While the Hooffield’s was driven more by banjo and strings, the McColts’ is driven by pot, pans, and good ‘ol blowin’ in jugs.  This really is a fantastic choice of instrumentation for them, as it sounds more mechanical.  As it is revealed in the episode, the McColts are more focused on building, while the Hooffields are focused on growing food.

The royal theme is once again used here as Twilight introduces herself.  As the McColt’s theme starts back up, this time with a wonderful Dobro guitar as well.
