Wandering through the ruins of the old library you find a book. It is old, dusty and you must take special care with the pages lest a hasty turn causes them to crumble. This book is full of such intriguing information. History, myth, science, fantasy, philosophy? The words seem to leap from the pages and bounce in your skull. Before long the voice reading in your head starts to sound more and more foreign. You can't stop, you must read more! These words fill you like an empty cup, but there are still more pages. The book is all that matters, the book is all you know. The words in the book make up your speech and your thought, you have become a vessel, an extension of the words. Is this a curse? An enchanted compendium? Or has the madness always been inside you? A lust for knowledge only waiting to be awoken.

Ghostly Compendium

The words,
Ink like fingers on leaves of white,
that peeled from the pages to pierce my skull.

I tried to shut them out, but they crawled beneath my eyelids
and mixed with my bloodstream

I tear at the pages
But they exist inside me, squirming under my skin, speaking in a voice much like my own.
Read, Read.

I won’t be afraid.
They pick at my brain, but they cannot consume me.
These words are legacy, memory, ghosts.
Only paper
I will consume them all.

And so, I to become a ghost.
A shell to be filled with writhing words.
A ghostly compendium.
